Instruments of Occupation

Instruments of Occupation is an installation by photographer Dan Dubowitz, composer Tuomas Toivonen and curator Markus Lähteenmäki. Conceived over several collective journeys to the Helsinki archipelago during winter 2022–23 it comprises a series of encounters with “accidental monuments” bearing witnesses to military occupation and their absorption by nature over time. The objects the work captures are past instruments of military occupation and control; defence and expansion. Ominous and enigmatic, apparently mute, yet a ubiquitous part of our environment, this exhibition challenges us to ask: how can we connect with such objects today?

The installation takes soundings of these enigmatic objects with the composer’s, photographer’s and historian’s eye, ear and body. The installation in the National Archives in Helsinki centres on eight photographs (Dubowitz) paired with sound compositions (Toivonen). Orchestrated into one, polyphonic installation it choreographs and rewires these disparate objects across this actual and metaphorical archipelago. It turns them into other kinds of instruments of a different kind of occupation, to begin to tune them to sing a new, shared tune.

The installation is in companion with a large selection of archival documents comprising of survey and design drawings for fortifications by the Russian military engineering corps, and designs for the monumental reconstruction of Helsinki by Carl Ludvig Engel. They exhibit the practices of control and display of power through drawing and building, revealing the competing and complimentary logics of the city and archipelago. The city is designed only in elevation, the fortified islands in section. Bringing this historical material into a dialogue with the new work encourages to asks: what can such alternative ways of practicing and seeing reveal to us about the past?

Collectively this work reveals the deep and complex layers of connection between the archipelago and city, the built and nature, past and present, suggesting that one cannot be understood without the other.

Installation is open for guided tours only. The tours are lead by the authors of the installation and are in Finnish and English.

Instruments of Occupation -installaatio on taiteilija Dan Dubowitzin, säveltäjä Tuomas Toivosen ja kuraattori Markus Lähteenmäen yhteisteos. Näyttelyn keskiössä oleva, kansallisarkiston näyttelytilaan levittyvä Dubowtizin ja Toivosen uusi audiovisuaalinen installaatio luotaa Helsingin saariston sotilaallista rakennusperintöä kuvan ja äänen keinoin. Sen rinnalle asettuu laaja esillepano venäläisen insinöörikomennuskunnan Helsingin edustan saaristoa varten laatimia linnoitussuunnitelmia sekä Carl Ludvig Engelin samaan aikaan Helsingin uutta monumentaalikeskustaa varten tekemiä piirustuksia. Kokonaisuus avaa uusia tapoja katsoa ja määrittää luonnon ja rakennetun ympäristön, kaupungin ja saariston, historian ja nykypäivän sekä tieteen ja taiteen suhteita. Se tekee näkyväksi jännitteitä, jotka helposti jäävät huomaamatta, yrittäen uudelleen virittää suhdettamme ympäristöömme ja sen merkityksiin ammentaen historiasta, mutta katsoen kohti tulevaa. Tuomalla Kansallisarkistoon taiteilijoiden tavat katsoa, installaatio laajentaa totuttuja keinoja käyttää arkistoa.
