More affordable options:
If you would want to book an Airbnb-accommodation, we would suggest areas such as “Kruununhaka”, “Katajanokka”, “Kaartinkaupunki”, which are close to the City Centre Campus.
The prices of the hotels range from €85 to €170 per night (subject to change), whereas hostel dormitory prices can be as low as €35 per night. The hotels are located in the immediate vicinity of the university, whereas the hostels are within about 30 minutes’ walking distance.
Considering arrival we would recommend taking the local train from the airport to the Helsinki central railway station, if possible. The airport train station is located beneath the airport, so you do not need to exit the airport building in order to access the train. Some walking is required.
Local trains I and P operate between Helsinki Airport and the city centre on the Ring Rail Line every 10–20 minutes. The journey takes 30 minutes and you do not need to change trains. A regional ABC ticket is required. Please note that you need to buy the ticket before entering the train. The same applies to all other forms of public transport in Helsinki.
There are also taxis available in front of the airport terminal. Bus 615 runs between the airport and the Central Railway Station and takes around 45 minutes. Bus 415N operates at night.
A regional ABC ticket can be purchased from a ticket machine or via HSL mobile app. There are ticket machines available at the Airport train station and at the metro stations. More information about public transport, timetables and tickets can be found on HSL's website: Information for visitors.
In general, everything in the Helsinki city centre, where the conference is located, is within walking distance. You can find more information on travel, public transport and attractions at the University of Helsinki from University´s webpage: Guide for visitors. The same site offers information on the Wireless Network of the University as well as on other services.
Please note that nowadays cash is seldom used in Finland, so exchanging a lot of money might not be worthwhile. Also some smaller cafeterias etc. might not be happy to receive even a 50 euro note. For this reason, using credit or debit cards or paying with your phone is advisable.
The address "Guide for visitors" contains also some information on places worth visiting in Helsinki.
In addition, we might suggest few additional – for instance, you can visit as many as six art museums right in the centre of Helsinki. At least the following four happen to have quite interesting exhibitions open in August:
All the mentioned museums are within walking distance from the City Centre Campus.
There are also plenty of art galleries in Helsinki, which are free of charge. Such as:
