How to apply?

The calls for Aleksanteri visiting fellowships open each January for appointments in the next academic year and the grant-holders are selected by an academic committee by mid-April.

The criteria for selecting Visiting Fellows combine academic excellence, potential for a mutually beneficial research visit and our aim to invite a diverse cohort of fellows in terms of research topics, disciplines, and countries of study.

We are pleased to have received a great number of excellent applications for each call. At the same time, this means that we are able to invite only a small part of all those scholars whom we would want to host. Therefore, we warmly encourage resubmissions.

Who can apply?

The fellowship is intended for scholars who are carrying out research in a field relevant to the Aleksanteri Institute’s multidisciplinary research profile on Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and whose place of residence is outside Finland. Applicants can be at any career stage but must hold a PhD degree. The degree must be granted before the application period closes.

Visiting Fellows are expected to contribute to the advancement of Russian, Eastern European and Eurasiaan studies in general and to the research agenda of the Aleksanteri Institute in particular.

Grant-holders are required to have an excellent command of English.

Welcome back, alumni!

We wish to continue working with our previous Visiting Fellows who want to further develop research cooperation with colleagues in Finland, and we welcome resubmissions to the Visiting Fellows Programme by its alumni.

When to apply?

The call for applications for the upcoming academic year (from 1 August through 30 June) is published in January and closes in mid-February. Please check the exact dates for each upcoming call. Calls are announced on our website, via emailing lists and through social media.

All applicants will be personally notified of the result and the names of the Visiting Fellows invited for a research stay will be published at the Aleksanteri Institute's website.

How to submit?

Applications can be submitted only during the application period. An application consists of an electronic form (made available when the application period begins) and materials submitted along with the electronic form:

  1. A cover letter
  2. Research plan
  3. CV
  4. List of publications

The cover letter should specify the purpose of the research visit and its potential for mutually benefiting the applicant and the host institute. If you are interested in a research stay at the Aleksanteri Institute and consider applying for our visiting fellowships, we kindly ask you to check the call announcement for detailed and up-to-date application instructions.
