Gustav Lundberg is a PhD candidate at the Södertörn University who is working as an INREES visiting fellow at the Aleksanteri Institute for the summer.
In his seminar presentation Ethnopolitics and Parliamentary Democracy: from Israel to Latvia on Thursday, 24 August Lundberg will present his outlines for theoretical framework for his forthcoming dissertation on ethnopolitics in Latvia. In his research paper, he draws on different theoretical debates concerning the relation between democracy and ethnicity. He synergizes the theoretical strands into a model that serves to describe the reasons why and how democracies become pervaded by ethnopolitics, and the effects that this development tends to have on the quality of democracy. Lastly, he applies the model on the Latvian presidential elections held earlier this year in an attempt to explain the rationales of different actors against the backdrop of ethnopolitical considerations.
