We have put together courses that provide the latest researched information on climate change and sustainable development.

The contents of the courses are

  • climate change as a scientific phenomenon and its impacts on ecosystems and societies
  • mitigation and solving complex sustainability challenges
  • structure and dynamics of complex systems related to solving sustainability challenges
  • systems thinking necessary to comprehend the implications of climate change and other global challenges
  • circular economy

  • greenhouse effect, carbon cycle, emission scenarios and climate models
  • carbon footprint, energy system, sustainability transition
  • sustainable food system, forest-based cycles, technical cycles, transportation and the sharing economy
Target group

Some courses do not feature any prerequisites and are suited to students in all disciplines.

You will learn to look at climate change and sustainability challenges from many different perspectives - and learn to find solutions.

You learn to examine different perspectives, solutions, information sources and the current debate on climate change and sustainability challenges critically.
Structure and content

The thematic entity of Climate Change consists of several different courses. If you wish, you can complete either all of the courses or just individual courses according to your own interests and needs.

ATM391 Climate University, study module 15-33 cr



Compulsory courses: ATM302 Climate.now and ATM 378 Sustainable.now



You can choose one or more of the optional courses.

ATM302 Climate.now  5 cr or

ATM386 Climate.now 2 cr

What everyone needs to know about climate change? Climate.now is a course on the basics of climate system, its change and effects of the change, how to mitigate and adapt to changing climate.

 

ATM378 Sustainable.now  5 cr

After completing the course you know sustainable development as a political and normative concept and recognize its ecological, social, economic and cultural dimension and the connections and contradictions associated with them.

The course is part of Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences.



 

Optional courses:

 

ATM379 SystemsChange.now 5 cr

Systems thinking is necessary to comprehend the implications of climate change and other global challenges and relate them to changes in the Earth system and human eco-social systems.

Course schedule: spring 2023 (the study programme will be published in the fall 2022)

 

ATM380 Solutions.now 5 cr

In the course you will learn how to be able to mitigate and solve sustainability problems and to understand structure and dynamics of complex systems related to solving sustainability challenges in a real-life project.

 

MAAT-051 Circular.now 3 cr / MAAT-051 Kiertotalous.nyt 3 op

Develop an overall image of the circular economy and understand its basic principles.

 

ATM373 Leadership for sustainable change 5 cr

Leadership for sustainable change is a course about sustainable world and how to get there. 

 

ATM308 Statistical tools for climate and atmospheric science 5 cr

Statistical tools for climate and atmospheric science introduces you to basic statistical methods for analyzing atmospheric and climate measurement data

 

 

FYS4027 Ilmasto.nyt, tutustumiskurssi 2 op

Kaikille ilmastokysymyksistä kiinnostuneille soveltuva tutustumiskurssi. Oppimisen tavoitteena on, että opiskelija hallitsee perusteet ilmastonmuutoksesta luonnontieteellisenä ilmiönä sekä sen hillinnästä ja siihen sopeutumisesta.
