Accessibility at the Main Building

This page provides information on the various facilities and accessibility of the Main Building. Accessibility details are described in the text and images on a floor-by-floor basis.
Main Building: first floor

On the first floor of the Main Building, you will find Entrance Halls Fabian and Aleksi, Helsinki University Museum Flame, the indoor plaza Fuksi, Café Civis, Restaurant Laurus, the meeting centre, the covered Agora courtyard and an accessible courtyard parking space.

Entrances

An accessible entrance is located at the far left of the Fabianinkatu entrance. Lobby services are available on the right-hand side of the entrance hall.

There is no accessible entrance on Unioninkatu or Aleksanterinkatu. An alternative entrance is from the courtyard at the Yliopistonkatu side, which also has an accessible parking space. A ramp leads to the entrance. Next to this entrance are an accessible WC, storage lockers and an accessible lift to the upper floors.

Routes

The Fabianinkatu entrance provides unobstructed access to Helsinki University Museum Flame, Restaurant Laurus, WC facilities (accessible WC), Agora, Fuksi, Entrance Hall Fabian and the meeting centre (rooms F1053–F1065). The exhibition facilities of Helsinki University Museum Flame include stairs and a wheelchair lift.

Accessible entrance to Café Civis is available from the Fabianinkatu side. The café facilities are accessed via stairs, with a wheelchair lift on the right.

Access to the upper floor via lift is available at the left side of the main entrance. Accessible entrance to the Unioninkatu side of the building is available on the second floor. You can also access the facilities on the Unioninkatu side through Restaurant Laurus during its opening hours.

Accessible entrance to Entrance Hall Aleksi is available through Restaurant Laurus from the entrance on the Fabianinkatu side. A wheelchair lift up to the landing in the entrance hall is available immediately at the bottom of the stairs. If the restaurant is closed, Entrance Hall Aleksi can be accessed by taking an accessible lift located in the facilities of Helsinki University Museum Flame to the second floor, from which there is a connecting corridor to the Unioninkatu side. Another accessible lift at the end of the corridor, and can be used to access a further corridor leading to Entrance Hall Aleksi.

Main Building: second floor

On the second floor of the Main Building, you will find the entrance from the Unioninkatu side, the Great Hall, the Auditorium, the staff restaurant, foyers (Rectoria, U2087, U2065), the event spaces Runeberg, Pacius, Christina and Wexionius, and meeting room U2071. The Auditorium and Foyer Rectoria are located on the Fabianinkatu side. The Great Hall, meeting room U2071 and the Wexionius event space are located on the Unioninkatu side. The rest of the facilities are located along the connecting corridor on the Aleksanterinkatu side.

Entrances

The Unioninkatu entrance is not accessible. For alternative routes, see the description for the first floor.

Routes

An accessible lift is available at the end of the corridor on the right from the Unioninkatu entrance. From the same location, a corridor connects to the facilities on the Fabianinkatu side and to an accessible WC. The corridor on the left can also be used to access the Fabianinkatu facilities. 

An accessible entrance to the Great Hall is available in the foyer on the right.

You can reach the Auditorium through the connecting corridor to the facilities on the Fabianinkatu side. The Auditorium itself is accessed via a short flight of stairs. A wheelchair lift is available at the Yliopistonkatu end of the building (at the stairs on the left when looking towards the Auditorium).

Main Building: third floor

On the third floor of the Main Building, you will find the Studium 1–5 facilities (F3020, F3022b, F3022c, F3023b, F3023c) and Foyer Studium. These are located on the Fabianinkatu side. Also on the Fabianinkatu side are teaching spaces F3002–F3017, while teaching spaces U3029–U3043 can be found on the Unioninkatu side. Room U3032 is also known as the Karolina Eskelin Hall, while room F3003 is known as the Tekla Hultin Hall.

Routes

There is no route between the Unioninkatu and Fabianinkatu facilities on the third floor. Access between the two sides of the building is available on the second floor. Both sides have an accessible lift at the Yliopistonkatu end. 

Accessible entrance to the Studium facilities is available from the central doors on the Fabianinkatu side.

An accessible WC is located at the Yliopistonkatu end on the Fabianinkatu side.

Main Building: fourth floor

On the fourth floor of the Main Building, you will find the Small Hall, Lobby F4001a and teaching spaces U4060–U4079. The teaching spaces are located on the Unioninkatu side, the other facilities on the Fabianinkatu side.

Routes

There is no route between the Unioninkatu and Fabianinkatu facilities on the fourth floor. Access between the two sides of the building is available on the second floor. Both sides have an accessible lift at the Yliopistonkatu end. 

Accessible entrance to the Small Hall is located on the Fabianinkatu side of the building. The Small Hall itself is accessed via a short flight of stairs. The stairs are equipped with a wheelchair lift. An accessible WC is located next to the accessible lift on the Fabianinkatu side.
