Viikki Living Lab

As part of the development of Viikki to become the most sustainable innovation campus in the world, we have begun to build a new kind of experimental environment for the benefit of Viikki’s innovation ecosystem: Viikki Living Lab is a multidisciplinary platform for co-development and participatory research that supports the creation of sustainable solutions in collaboration with citizens.

Viikki Living Lab brings together the University of Helsinki’s research and teaching, the residents of Viikki, and those visiting Viikki for studies or work, as well as businesses in various fields. Viikki Living Lab provides a platform for co-development and testing of sustainable innovations, such as new products and services for food system and wood and forest related businesses.

Viikki Food Design Factory leads the development of Viikki Living Lab in close cooperation with Viikki Wood & Forest Innohub. The work has begun with charting key stakeholders in the pilot environment, co-developing its concept and operating methods, and piloting various experiments.

When ready, Viikki Living Lab offers the following:

  • For research and teaching: A platform that enables regionally oriented, inclusive citizen science.
  • For businesses: User and consumer insight gathering as well as rapid testing opportunities.
  • For residents of Viikki as well as those visiting the University of Helsinki for work and studies: Participation in the development of innovations and sustainable solutions, in research conducted in Viikki, and in the development of the district.

Viikki residents, students, researchers and entrepreneurs: Join us!

The unique environment of Viikki represents an urban lifestyle aspiring to the principles of sustainability and planetary health.

The Viikki Living Lab pilot environment provides residents and actors in the Viikki region with the opportunity to participate, for example, in the sensory testing of new food products or pilots in local food production and distribution. The living lab environment enables various projects from local urban farming to increasing wellbeing through use of nature-based materials.
