ADMISSIONS TO THE VIIKKI TEACHER TRAINING SCHOOL

A traditional school with an excellent ranking

The Viikki Teacher Training School was established in 1869 as Finland’s first Finnish-language school for girls. The year 2019 thus marks our school’s 150th anniversary. Our school draws from a long history full of traditions while preparing for the future with an open mind.

The Viikki Teacher Training School is held in high regard at both national and international levels, as demonstrated by the many visits we host and projects we undertake. Our upper secondary school students also consistently rank at the top in matriculation examinations in Finland. We place great value on sustainability and received a sustainable development certificate in 2008, which we renewed in 2011 and 2014. We also received the Green Flag eco-label in 2010.

University teacher training school

The Viikki Teacher Training School is a teacher training school that operates under the University of Helsinki and houses approximately 250 upper secondary school students. The school emphasises a broad knowledge base and the use of modern educational technologies. We also value sustainable development and have a sustainable development certificate and the Green Flag eco-label as proof.

In addition to our regular course selection, our students can take university courses, a final examination in speech communication and diplomas in various subjects. Each year, our upper secondary school also produces a musical. We support our students by fostering a communal culture and an appreciative atmosphere.

Our school building is also home to a comprehensive school, and as a university teacher training school, we train prospective teachers. Thanks to this mission, we explore, experiment and develop new methods, approaches and learning materials to enable better learning and teaching. Our group sizes are also smaller than average.

Modern school

The facilities of our modern school are functional and welcoming. The classrooms are grouped into subject-specific units, creating several common rooms for students to use in our large school building. We offer a wide variety of applied and advanced courses, particularly in artistic and practical subjects, including visual arts, music, physical education, home economics and crafts. We also offer an extensive language programme. In addition, students can take university courses in subjects such as biology, physics, history, chemistry, geography, mathematics, and ICT.

Our school is also active in student council and tutor activities, sustainable development, and various music and drama productions. We make a point of offering our students an inspiring and safe learning environment. Our classrooms are equipped with modern technology and conveniences, from teaching aids to air conditioning and lighting.
