Recently published book on "Nanotechnology for Oral Drug Delivery" by João Martins and Prof. Hélder Santos

Oral delivery is, undoubtedly, the most preferred form of drug administration, but an unmet need for a vast number of therapeutic strategies. Nanotechnology has become routinely present in our daily lives, but will it ever be possible to replace the diabetic patients’ injections by an oral pill? Will orally administered nanotechnology ever be an efficient manner of treating cancer or cardiovascular diseases?

Over the last years, the field of nanomedicine has achieved solid progress, providing researchers with knowledge and tools that enable the development of advanced drug carriers. Hence, the synergy between nanotechnology and oral drug delivery holds the promise of revolutionizing therapies as we know them.

PhD student João Pedro Martins and Prof. Hélder A. Santos, from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Helsinki, introduce us to their recently edited book entitled “Nanotechnology for Oral Drug Delivery: From Concept to Applications”. Published by Academic Press – Elsevier, a leading publisher of scientific publications, this book boasts a number of excellent researchers as authors from all over the world, thoroughly discussing materials, delivery systems and manufacturing techniques, as well as advances and challenges in the fields where nanotechnology meets oral drug delivery.

Prof. Robert Langer, one of the world’s top scientists in the field and academic co-founder of Moderna, which is currently on the run for commercializing a COVID-19 vaccine, states on his foreword that “this book should be a useful reference to scientists in universities and companies alike who are working on oral drug delivery and nanoparticulate systems”. The MIT professor adds that this area “is also expected to increase in importance in the future”.

The potential impact of nanomedicine in oral drug delivery is on the genesis of this book”, says Martins, “and we tried to gather a number of experts to highlight and discuss the most recent advances in the field”. Prof. Santos adds that “this book is expected to provide the scientific community with a great amount of content and data that can guide and inspire their research work in this field”.
