The credibility of modern tales: News reports as an example for the use of narrative in a digitalized world
Abstract: In information searching processes as a part of informal learning, particularly in social media, the distinction between reliable and less reliable information or news is essential. Furthermore, the use of online media as a source for news is rising which is of relevance, as online media today are more likely infiltered by fake news (i.e. news intentionally created to deceive or manipulate the recipient). Thus, it is particularly important to investigate processes of news evaluation and further to develop strategies to foster critical media literacy. In this multidisciplinary project, comprising several studies, we used a combination of different behavioral methods as well as brain imaging to examine the neurocognitive processes of fake news evaluation. I this talk I will give an overview of the preliminary results of the different studies. The analyses suggest for example that affective and social neurocognitive processes as e.g., reflecting the own self, mentalizing, taking perspective or feeling empathy and reward are important for deciding if news are credible or not. Further plans for future studies will be discussed.
