To apply please send your max. 300 word abstract and short CV to the organizers by January 31, 2021.

Changes in the environment have played a central role in Finland’s history and also made a profound impact on historical scholarship. Outstanding work has been produced at Finnish universities on the history of climate, landscape, water, air, urbanization, and technological networks, not only in relation to Finland’s history, but on a wide range of international and global topics.

The Finnish Environmental History Day was hosted by the Environmental Humanities Hub of the Helsinki University Humanities Programme in November 2020. The workshop aimed to showcase the current environmental history scholarship on Finnish topics.

Organizers now invite both established researchers and graduate students to submit their additional paper proposals to be included in a forthcoming edited volume in English, to be published with an established international academic publisher.

All themes related to environmental history of Finland and Finns abroad are welcome, and contributions on the following themes are particularly sought after:

  • Water (lakes, rivers, sea)

  • The Archipelago

  • Lapland (Sápmi) and the Sámi people

  • Forests

  • Finland between East and West
