Ecological Synthesis

We study how biodiversity responds to environmental change across time and ecosystems

We focus on understanding how human activities reshape which species are present in communities and the roles those species play in terrestrial and freshwater systems. Our research combines ecological datasets collected around the world with field observations and monitoring data to examine patterns of species composition, functional diversity, and connections between ecosystems. By bringing together information from many studies and regions, we aim to identify broad patterns of biodiversity change and improve our understanding of how ecosystems respond to human pressure. Typical research includes comparative, multi-taxa, multi-ecosystem studies and meta-analyses.
