The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) consisting of professors Henrik Semb, Marcia Haigis, and Kivanc Birsoy visited MetaStem for the first time on December 3rd-5th, 2018. Professor Semb directs the Helmholtz Diabetes Center in Germany, and DanStem in Denmark. He focuses on tissue architecture and on regenerative medicine targeting diabetes. Professor Haigis from Harvard Medical School, USA, focuses on mitochondrial function in aging and disease. Assistant Professor Kivanc Birsoy, Rockefeller University, USA, studies metabolic dependencies in cancer.
On December 3rd Dr. Birsoy gave the Biomedicum Helsinki Lecture, and the same afternoon we organized a Minisymposium on stem cell metabolism in Meilahti campus with lectures from Dr. Haigis, Dr. Semb and MetaStem Director Pekka Katajisto. The event also included posters from MetaStem students and PostDocs. On December 4th we had the SAB meeting with presentations from MetaStem groups and feedback from the SAB. December 5th the SAB visited Viikki Campus and discussed with students and PostDocs, and with personnel of the new MetaStem metabolomics core. A big thank you to the SAB for all their input and feedback supporting and improving our research.
