’Brain, Music and Learning’ group wonderfully combines three interesting and complementary aspects, which together provide not only a unique combination, but also deepen each other and open many views to numerous different disciplines and subdisciplines. Brain research and neurosciences are developing rapidly with sophisticated methodologies. We are also facing challenges in development, learning and studying from early childhood education and care to adult education. Music has been identified as one of the key factors in enhancing development and learning while, e.g., building connections between different areas and functions in the brain.
In BML group I have had a privilege to listen presentations of insightful studies and overviews of some particular topic or area, and participate in discussions to learn more and to reflect my views and questions with those of others. People participating the group have varied backgrounds both in education and in research interests. My background is in cultural anthropology as well as in educational and health sciences, which makes it fascinating to discuss with people from same or e.g., logopedics, medicine and psychology background. Variety of backgrounds enables to find unexpected and surprising views and questions, and to dive deep and find transdisciplinary views in respect of studies discussed.
I have enjoyed especially when some totally new topic or approach to the study discussed has been suggested. The experience participants have makes it possible to take different kind of stances and go further beyond what has been so far done both in a particular study and also wider in the field.
