AMRIWA (Antimicrobial Resistance in West Africa) is an interdisciplinary collaborative research project funded by the Academy of Finland and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland from 2018 to 2022 as part of the Academy of Finland’s Develop programme. AMRIWA’s collaborators are located in Finland, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Our collective aim is to better understand and control the emergence and transfer of antimicrobial resistance in West Africa by identifying hotspots of gene transfer, and by generating information on the social practices and material situations that produce these hotspots. We apply the One Health approach that recognises how pathogens that carry resistance genes move between humans, animals and environment.
