The focus of the ecological work has been on acclimatisation and adaptation of boreal zone algae to live in the humic brown water lakes - typical of the area - where for instance light environment and nutirent acquitision are challenging, hence our interest in mixotrophic algae. We have recently extended our research to marine environments, too. During the last 15 years we have taken this expertise in ecological to the applied research, which we often do in collaboration with private companies. In the applied research our aim is to use algae when e.g. solving environmental problems with the principles of circular economy and bioeconomy. We also aim to use algae when producing valuable compounds such as pigments and fatty acids.
