The Algological Research Group, located in Viikki as well as Lahti campuses, focuses on eukaryotic photosynthetic and mixotrophic algae. The algae are both of marine (brackish) and freshwater origin, and macroscopic as well as microscopic in size. Besides strains from commercial collections, we also use native strains we have isolated from boreal ecosystems. In our research, we combine basic and applied algology and use experimental protocols together with complementary and field approaches. In laboratory experiments, we culture algae in varying volumes (from ca. 20 mL to 500 L) and media. Besides algal ecology and eco-physiology, our studies are linked to ecosystems – atmosphere –interactions in the context of climate change as well as circular economy and bioeconomy
