Fresh perspectives on digital gambling markets
Two new PhD projects will look into the power structures and advertising networks of the online gambling industry, offering sociological insight on how addiction and harms are produced in online environments.
Paula Rautoja’s PhD is part of the
“The companies exercise considerable influence over consumer behaviour and regulatory frameworks, while responsibility for the harms associated with addictive commodities is often placed on individuals. This power imbalance is a compelling research topic, even if it can be frustrating at times.”
Mark Tarplee received funding from the Finnish Foundation for Alcohol Studies last fall for his PhD project. The idea for it developed alongside a previous project with his supervisor, Michael Egerer. His research focuses on gambling marketing in Finland, specifically affiliate marketing:
“I am looking into how the online gambling network is comprised, who is involved, how it is marketed and gains exposure, and the harms related to the increase in online gambling usage. I will conduct this sociologically by using Latour's actor-network theory.”

Doctoral studies offer possibilities for new encounters
Both Mark and Paula are looking forward to developing their skills in academic research and thinking during the next years. Meeting new people and learning from them is also a big part of the experience: both fellow scholars in conferences, and people from diverse backgrounds while gathering interview data.
Mark and Paula also highlight that their colleagues at CEACG are an important source of inspiration and support.
“I have the privilege of working alongside a group of experienced and inspiring colleagues. I'm really grateful for the support they give me”, Paula says.
“I am inspired by all those who work in the CEACG research group due to the fantastic and insightful work that is produced", Mark agrees.
