Tvärminne Zoological Station

Tvärminne Zoological Station is a marine station located at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research and offers facilities for field courses and seminars. TZS is open all year round and we welcome visiting scientists to conduct their research at TZS.  Below you can find a summary of the station resources, detailed information at the stations own www-page.

Tvärminne Zoological Station belongs to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. TZS is a marine station located at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high quality biological research, carries out environmental monitoring, and offers facilities for field courses and seminars.

TZS has an over a century long history of scientific research, with emphasis on the brackish waters of the Gulf of Finland. The station was established in 1902 and thus provides good background data for studying long-term environmental change. The area around TZS area is protected as a nature conservation area, which includes the sea and the seafloor, and where only activities related to research and education are allowed. A special permit is required for sampling in the area. Throughout the year it is not allowed to move in the area outside the official waterways or to go ashore any islands. Fishing is not allowed.

  1. Easy access to coastal habitats in the northern Baltic Sea; vast archipelago with high habitat complexity and strong gradients in biodiversity and the environment (salinity, wave exposure)
  2. Range of boats for coastal research, sampling equipment, and SCUBA diving facilities.
  3. Facilities for aquarium experiments (running sea water supply functional all year round)
  4. Well-equipped laboratories and provision of analytical services
  5. Logistic support for large-scale field experiments in the coastal area
  6. Capacity for winter ecology (sea-ice studies), hover craft
  7. Long-term monitoring data on environmental changes (station established in 1902)
  8. Nature reserve (600 ha land and sea) devoted to research and teaching activities
  9. FINMARI Algal Culture Collection, 220 strains of Baltic Sea phytoplankton
  10. New research vessel (18 m catamaran) coming in 2018

Tvärminne Zoological Station (TZS) has an over a century long history of scientific research, with emphasis on the brackish waters of the Gulf of Finland. The station was established in 1902 and thus provides good background data for studying long-term environmental change. Marine research at TZS focuses on the biodiversity and functioning of the Baltic Sea ecosystem, and the effects of anthropogenic stressors, such as eutrophication, climate change and ocean acidification. Evolutionary and population biology are also important topics, encompassing the social, sexual, and genetic structure of colony-forming insects, sexual selection and reproductive biology in fish and birds, and the dispersion and reproduction of insects and rock-pool organisms in fragmented landscapes (metapopulation biology).

TZS has a wide national and international collaboration network, including infrastructure networks, research collaboration, corporate collaboration, and outreach. Learn more from the station's own website.

Laboratory analyses prices are in € (without VAT 24 %). This price list is valid for UH life science researchers and their collaborators who work at Tvärminne Zoological Station. The prices are subject to alteration.

In addition to laboratory services in the list, staff can work for projects for compensation of hours worked. Compensation for use of staff during office hours is 31.50 € / h.

If sample quantity per analysis is > 10, discounts will be given as follows:
>10 samples: 10%; >30 samples: 20%; >50 samples: 30%.

WANS project DOC/TDN samples will get 15% extra discount.
