Practical instructions

Visitors to Kilpisjärvi Biological Station should familiarise themselves with these practical instructions to ensure a smooth and pleasant stay. Here you will find information on, among other topics, accommodation, meals, quiet hours, web connections and the station’s general rules. Please ensure a pleasant stay for everyone by observing the parking, cleanliness and safety guidelines.

The door code and lock-out fee

Visitors are given a door code for the duration of their stay. The door code is strictly confidential!

Did you lose or forget your keys? 

If you lock yourself out after office hours, call station manager Hannu Autto (+358 465 1226) or secretary Pirjo Hakala (+358 2941 40341).

Accommodation and visitors

Always use sheets on your bed.

The building includes a well-equipped visitor kitchen complete with several refrigerators and a freezer. Add a name tag to any food products you place in them and be sure to take the items with you when you leave. When using the visitor kitchen, please take other visitors into consideration and clean the facilities after use as soon as possible.

Quiet hours

Please maintain silence between 23:00 and 7:00. Avoid using the main entrance to the living quarters of the main building at night.

General tidiness

  • Please take off your outdoor shoes when entering and close the interior door, especially in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Comply with the instructions provided in the laboratories and other facilities.
  • Please take other users into consideration and clean up after yourself so that others can use the facilities.
  • Smoking indoors and in the immediate vicinity of the station is prohibited. A smoking area is located at the flagpole.

Pets

We have very limited capacity for pets. You can ask about the rules for pets when making your booking.

Internet connection and printing

You can use the station’s guest internet connection with UniGuest and Eduroam credentials. Ask for help in printing from the office.

Library

The station has a reference library open to researchers and students, from which books cannot be taken outside the building. The station library is located next to the dining room in the main building.

Station grounds

  • Please leave your car in the car park next to the main road.
  • The parking space on the station grounds is reserved for station vehicles.
  • Emergency access must not be obstructed.

Laundry and drying

  • The station’s facilities include a coin-operated washing machine, tumble dryer and drying cabinet.
  • The drying facilities can also be used to dry wet outdoor gear. Please keep in mind that other users may want to use the facilities.
