The research data from the Åland meadow network are used by several researchers. Questions related to the research can be directed to them. For practical matters concerning the surveys, it is advisable to contact Krista Raveala or Suvi Ikonen.

The surveys are part of the Research Centre for Ecological Change at the University of Helsinki. More information about the unit’s work can be found on its .

Anna-Liisa Laine

Anna-Liisa Laine is Professor of Plant Biodiversity and Director of the Research Centre for Ecological Change at the University of Helsinki. She is excited by the challenge of uncovering how species interactions shape biodiversity. Her group blends fieldwork, experiments, and theory to reveal these dynamics. A passionate advocate of long-term ecological data, she works to understand how ecosystems respond and adapt in a rapidly changing world!

Marjo Saastamoinen

Marjo Saastamoinen is a Professor of Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Helsinki. Her research aims to understand the effects of environmental change, such as habitat fragmentation and climate warming, on natural populations. A particular focus is on the various mechanisms by which individuals or populations tolerate changes occurring in their surroundings. The studies make use of both experimental approaches and long-term monitoring data, and increasingly also genetic analyses. The Glanville fritillary and its metapopulation in the Åland Islands have served as one of her main model systems since 2003.

Anne Duplouy

Anne Duplouy’s group studies the ecology and evolution of symbioses. She is interested in the diversity of symbionts in insect communities, in how host–symbiont interactions shape insect communities, and in how interactions among insect species influence the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of their symbionts. The group’s research focuses mainly, though not exclusively, on insect communities associated with ribwort plantain in the Åland Islands, and it makes use of data obtained from fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and metagenomic analyses to investigate eco-evolutionary processes.

Suvi Ikonen

Suvi Ikonen has worked as a project coordinator on the Glanville fritillary research for 20 years. Her main workplace is at the Lammi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki, where laboratory and field experiments are conducted on the larvae and adults of this species. Since 2018, she has also coordinated the autumn and spring surveys of the Glanville fritillary in the Åland Islands together with Krista Raveala.

Krista Raveala

Krista Raveala is a project planner in Anna-Liisa Laine’s group. She takes care of the day-to-day practicalities of the research both in the greenhouse, the laboratory, the office, and in fieldwork. Together with Suvi Ikonen, she is responsible for the practical arrangements of the autumn survey, and both also act as supervisors in the Åland Islands. The details related to the powdery mildew component of the survey are Krista’s responsibility.
