Please submit each urban/natural site pair in its own form. If you are signing up multiple teams at different locations, please fill in a separate form for each team.

If you cannot access the online form, please email us the following information:

Contact person / team coordinator

Fill in here the information of the person who will take the main responsibility of organizing the sampling team, and to whom we should be in contact when discussing in more detail the feasibility of including the site in LIFEPLAN.

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email
  • Current position
  • Field of expertise
  • Do you have a funded position until 2025? If not, how do you plan to ensure that you can coordinate the team until 2025?

Information of the person who will be responsible for each sampling method.

The same person can be responsible for multiple sampling methods (and be the team coordinator).

Soil sampling

Same questions as above

Malaise trap sampling

Same questions as above

Audio recording

Same questions as above, AND:

  • Are you an expert of bird calls or other animal sounds, and would you be prepared to contribute to the training data needed for our machine-based identification methods?
  • How much of your time?

We aim to identify vocal animals (mainly birds, but potentially also e.g. frogs and bats) from the sound recordings using machine learning methods (see e.g. Ovaskainen et al. 2018). To generate the training data needed to parameterize the species identification algorithms, we will utilize citizen science: we will develop an onnline platform through which volunteers will be asked to identify species present in selected audio samples. Thus, we ask you to state whether you might be prepared to contribute the expertise and time needed for generating these training data? If yes, then how much of your time (e.g. one week per year) do you expect to be able to commit on these activities?

Camera-trapping

Same questions as above, AND:

  • Are you an expert of mammals, and would you be prepared to contribute to the training data needed for our machine-based identification methods?
  • How much of your time?

We aim to identify mammals from the images using machine learning methods. To generate the training data needed to parameterize the species identification algorithms, we will utilize citizen science: we will develop a www-platform through which volunteers will be asked to identify species present in selected images. Thus, we ask you to state whether you might be prepared to contribute the expertise and time needed for generating these training data? If yes, then how much of your time (e.g. one week per year) do you expect to be able to commit on these activities?

Description of sampling location

Description of how sampling will be organized

  • How will you ensure that the entire team can continue sampling until 2025? For example, will the sampler be located at a field station with long-term funding? Or will it be run by individual researchers / their students? Does your team involve permanent staff?
  • Are any specific permits needed for conducting sampling at the intended site? If yes, do you anticipate any problems in obtaining them?
  • Are you aware of your national Nagoya / ABS regulations, have you ever been in contact with your national contact point and/or are you prepared to help us contact and negotiate the relevant national authorities? We will employ a full-time lawyer to facilitate this process, but will need your contributions.

Location

  • Coordinates of the two sampling locations (the urban and the natural environment): please provide latitude, longitude as decimal degrees (e.g. from Google Maps)
  • A brief description of the area (habitat types, protection status, previous use in your research activities, potential risks associated to sampling, e.g. related to security)

Payment options

Please pick one from the alternatives identified under What will it cost me:

  1. Participating only if selected for Option 1
  2. Participating under Option 2
  3. Preferring  Option 1, but if not selected for that, asking us to contact you again to examine Option 2
