In the KIVAPE training at the University of Helsinki, you can study the basic studies of early childhood education in a language-supported way. KIVAPE studies are intended for migrants who are eligible for higher education and interested in working in early childhood education. The participants’ starting level in the Finnish language should be B1. KIVAPE studies do not provide qualification for an early childhood education teacher on their own. After the KIVAPE studies, the student's goal is to apply for the degree program leading to an early childhood education teacher's degree. KIVAPE studies are part of the studies of the degree education of an early childhood education teacher and reduce the time of completion of the degree. Basic studies in early childhood education are completed in KIVAPE education, of which there are a total of 25 credits (ECTS). In addition, the education includes 20 credits in Finnish as well as personal guidance. All teaching and guidance is in Finnish, language-supported and language-aware.

The program develops a model for integrating studies in an English-language degree program in technology with Finnish language studies. The aim is to strengthen the students’ language skills so that they are better prepared to find employment in Finland after their degree. The participants are students in the Bachelor of Science and Technology. They do not need any Finnish language skills at the beginning of the project (entry level 0-A1).
In addition to the pilot trainings carried out during the project, we will establish collaborative models between education institutions to support and expand the implementation of language-aware pedagogy. These models will be aimed at education providers across Finland with the goal of fostering sustainable and wide-reaching adoption.
