Brokering algorithmic futures

Brokering algorithmic futures (BROKERS) is a two-year project promoting new best practices in algorithmic system development.

Algorithmic systems and artificial intelligence applications promise speed, efficiency, and scalability, but the reality often falls short. We identified several key areas in the development of algorithmic systems, where human aspects become sidelined, resulting in systems that are misaligned with what is needed, and in conflict with societally cherished values like privacy, autonomy and openness. Together with our partners we design concepts and tools to develop better algorithmic systems.

The project receives funding from the Research Council of Finland’s Proof of Concept Funding.

What is brokering in algorithmic system development?
  • Brokering acts at the intersection of critical social science and the engineering-driven world of technology.
  • Brokers carry ideas and insights across domains, ultimately shaping how technological practices evolve. We make sure that people are in the driver’s seat—shaping technology, not the other way around.
  • Brokers translate the logics of different worlds and bring them together so that the outcome can be useful and meaningful for target groups, business, and the society at large.
