Ceren invites to discussion through documentary films

The Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism, Ceren, organises a series of documentary films and subsequent academic panel discussions. The aim is to link culture with science and create lively discussions.

The three documentary films shown deal with subject thematically linked to Ceren’s research field, i.e. social polarization and nationalism, extremism and related global issues. The films have attracted attention at film festivals in the past year.

The occasions are open to all interested and create opportunities for new insights.

Wednesday 29.3.2017, 16:00-19:30, Elina Hirvonen: Kiehumispiste / Boiling point (90 min.)

Xenophobia, poverty and hybrid warfare are shaking the foundations of Europe. Boiling Point reflects these issues through Finland. Are we reaching a point where dialogue ends and violence starts?

The evening begins with director Elina Hirvonen’s presentation of the film Kiehumispiste / Boiling point and after the film an academic panel led by University Lecturer Leena Malkki will discuss the themes and questions raised by the film.

The panel participants are: Thomas Elfgren (detective chief superintendent, Central Criminal Police), Niko Pyrhönen (researcher, CEREN/Soc&kom, University of Helsinki), Oula Silvennoinen (docent, University of Helsinki) and Suldaan Said Ahmed (activist, politician). The language of the panel is Finnish.

Wednesday 5.4.2017, 16:00-19:30, Pål Refsdal: Dugma – The Button (58 min.)

An intimate portrait of a group of very different suicide bombers working for Al Qaeda in Syria. From the Saudi who loves singing and fried chicken, to a 26-year-old white British convert who worries a lot about his new wife, this remarkable film embeds with an unlikely bunch of "martyrdom seekers", each waiting for their turn to go on a final mission, known by Jihadis as 'Dugma'.

The evening begins with director Pål Refsdal’s presentation of the film Dugma – The Button and after the film an academic panel led by University Lecturer Leena Malkki will discuss the themes and questions raised by the film.

The panel participants are: Pål Refsdal (Documentarist), Jarmo Heinonen (Chief Inspector, Helsinki Police), Hunderra Assefa (Expert), Kristina Westerholm (Specialist, City of Helsinki), Olli Ruohomäki (Visiting Senior Fellow, Finnish Istitute of International Affairs). The language of the panel is English.

Wednesday 12.4.2017, 16:00-19:30, Ashish Ghadiali: The Confession (96 min.)

Moazzam Begg has experienced a generation of conflict. The Confession captures the entirety of Begg’s story, from his forced confession and testimony as a free man, to his experience as a British Muslim and living the War on Terror. Commissioned by BBC Storyville and the BFI, The Confession is a gripping account of the rise of modern jihad, its descent into terror and the disastrous reaction of the West.

Moazzam Begg will tell about the film via Skype and answer questions and after the film an academic panel led by University Lecturer Leena Malkki will discuss the themes and questions raised by the film.

The panel participants are: Risto Marjomaa (University Lecturer, University of Helsinki), Jari Taponen (Chief Inspector, Helsinki Police), Susanna Mehtonen (Expert, Amnesty), Guleed Ahmed (NuMu ry.), and Matti Cantell (Settlementtiliitto). The language of the panel is English.
