Prof. Santos receives Academy of Finland funding for hosting a US National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow

Prof. Santos is very happy and very thankful for receiving funding from Academy of Finland to support a US National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow form University of California, Los Angeles, to visit his lab for 12 months to work on: "Remote-Controlled Therapeutic Manipulation and Release from Magnetic Porous Silicon Nanoparticles". The US National Science Foundation (NSF) awards Graduate Research Fellow (GRF) grants to talented US researchers working on their doctoral thesis for research spells in Finland or other countries included in the Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW) programme.

Multiple drug resistance (MDR), the mechanism by which cancers develop resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs, is a major limitation for effective cancer treatment. One approach to overcome MDR is to co-deliver small interfering RNA (siRNA) and a chemotherapeutic in porous silicon nanoparticles. This project aims to formulate magnetically responsive porous silicon nanoparticles delivering siRNA/chemotherapeutics to shed light on how siRNA delivery can be remotely-controlled. This work will use both magnetic manipulation and heating to improve siRNA localization and controlled release at a tumor site.
