About us

Viikki Living Lab promotes sustainable development through practical experiments.

Viikki Living Lab is a pilot environment coordinated by the University of Helsinki that supports the multidisciplinary sustainability transition at the Viikki Innovation Campus. It brings together research, education, local residents and businesses to develop solutions for building a more sustainable future.

The pilot environment provides a platform for participatory research, education and co-development. It enables, for example, testing innovations related to the food system or wood and forest business in an authentic living environment.

Viikki’s unique environment combines urban nature, research and everyday life. Viikki, which is developing in the middle of a national historical landscape, is being built as a sustainable innovation hub for Helsinki – an area where research, experiments and practical solutions go hand in hand.

The Viikki Living Lab development work is led by Viikki Food Design Factory and Viikki Wood & Forest Innovation Hub. We will map the pilot environment’s key stakeholders, co-develop its concept and operating methods, and pilot various experiments.

We offer:

  • A platform for research and education that enables regionally focused, participatory citizen research.
  • For companies, a route to consumer and user understanding and experimentation.
  • For residents and students, a way to participate in the development of innovations and the promotion of sustainability, research in Viikki, and the development of the city district.
