Phenological research

Phenology is a field of research focused on periodic events in the annual life cycles of animals and plants.
Phenology

Phenological events include, among others, the onset of frog spawn, hedgehogs waking from hibernation and the arrival of waxwings in the autumn.

The Finnish Museum of Natural History and the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters collaborate with some 100 volunteer nature enthusiasts to annually collect phenological observations on Finnish flora and fauna. The observations are compiled into a summary, and that summary and new observation forms are posted every year to the participants in appreciation of their valuable contributions.

Participate in phenological surveys

All interested nature lovers can participate in the phenological monitoring conducted by the Finnish Museum of Natural History and the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters. Registering as a participant is free and does not oblige anyone to anything. All participants can make observations according to their own schedules.

The observation forms for animals and plants are available from the contact persons listed below or can be downloaded as PDF files here (in Finnish).
