Working areas

The library has spaces for both collaborative and independent work. This page provides information about facilities and their equipment at different library locations.
Sound zones

The library is divided into different sound zones, which are marked with colored signs. 

The library is not responsible for any items left at your workspace. You will find other rights and responsibilities of the customer and the library, in the .

Conversation-friendly area

In the green area you can relax, chat, and work by yourself or with others.

Quiet area

Quiet conversation is allowed in the blue area. Most of the library premises are quiet areas.

Silent area

The purple area is intended for quiet work. Keep all your devices completely silent.

Silent working areas

The silent reading room is located on the 2nd floor of the library. Rooms for silent work are also located on floors 5 to 7.

Accessible work room

The 6th floor has an accessible work room (6042) that is primarily intended for wheelchair users and standing work. The room cannot be reserved. The work room has reading and working places for 1–4 people and two easily adjustable electric tables. 

In addition, there are several electrically adjustable tables on the 2nd floor. Some of the tables are equipped with a fixed computer or docking station.

Prayer and meditation room

Room (4058) is located on the 4th floor of the library. In this room, you can contemplate, pray, or meditate. It is open during the building's opening hours and is freely available to all members of the university community. No separate booking is required. 

Recreational facilities

The recreation area is located on the entrance floor (3rd floor) in the back corner on the Vuorikatu side. The area also has a separate student break room with space for 6 to 8 people. The room has a microwave and a kettle. 

In addition, there is a terrace on the Fabianinkatu side of the 7th floor, which is open from spring to autumn.

Phone rooms

The are phone rooms on floors 4 to 6, each with 2 phone rooms and on floors 2 and 7, both with 1 phone room. 

Please don't reserve a phone room as a personal reading or studying space.. If a phone room is occupied or you cannot find one, make your call somewhere to the side so as not to disturb others.

Mobile storage units

Mobile storage units are located on floors K3, 2, 4, 5 and 6. 

You can use the units to store books you have borrowed from the library and other studying equipment. University of Helsinki students can borrow the key to the mobile storage unit from the library customer service.

Lockers

Lockers for daytime use are located on the 3rd floor, along the bathroom corridor near the main entrance. The lockers operate with a €2 coin. 

Exam rooms 3006 and 5057 have lockers for exam takers that can be locked with a key.

Conversation-friendly areas

1st and 2nd floor are co-working areas where you can, for example, do group work or participate in remote lectures. Talking is allowed in this area.

Quiet areas

The 3rd and 4th floors are quiet areas intended for concentrated work. Quiet conversation is allowed.

Recreational facilities

The entrance floor has a recreational area with a water point, kettle, microwaves, coffee machine, and a snack vending machine.

Sensory friendy room

The sensory friendly room on the 4th floor has adjustable ceiling lighting and adjustable desk lamps. Strong fragrances are not allowed in the room.

Family study room

The family room located on the floor K1 is a space for studying with a child. The room is equipped with child-friendly furniture and children's books, as well as a privacy screen for breastfeeding. The room is located on the K1 floor.

Relaxation space

The relaxation space, intended for recovery alongside studying, is located on the 3rd floor. The space has a peaceful soundscape and can be used by several people at the same time. It is furnished with armchairs and sofas, and it is also possible to lie down if necessary. The room cannot be reserved in advance and is intended for short-term use.

Phone booths

Phone booths are located on floors 2, 3 and 4. The accessible phone room is located on floor K1, near the elevator.

Mobile storage units

Silent working rooms G108c and G108c are located on the 1st floor of the library. Silent reading room G225 is located on the 2nd floor.

The phone booth is located on the 1st floor in the reading area opposite the entrance.

The silent working rooms K1095 and K1045 are located on the floor K1. Both rooms can also be accessed via the lobby on floor K1.
