Christmas season 2021-2022 in the Library

During the holiday season, Library has reduced opening hours, Campus libraries are partly closed and the books have long loan periods. E-resources are available 24/7 for university community also at holiday season.

Remember Safe Visiting, Wear a Face Mask

Remember safe visiting and follow the library's instructions also in the holiday season. 

An extensive recommendation to wear face masks is in effect in Uusimaa. Therefore, wearing a protective face mask is also required on library premises.

Holiday Opening Hours from December 13 until January 9

Kaisa House and Viikki are open with reduced hours on weekdays and closed on public holidays. Campus Libraries in Kumpula and Meilahti are closed from December 20 until January 9. The Learning Centre Aleksandria and Minerva are closed until January 9. Examinations will be organised as planned.

Customer Service from the Kaisa House

Main Library Kaisa House customer service on the entrance floor is open Mon-Fri 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. We try to answer e-mails during the following working day. Chat on the library website is available Mon-Fri 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. from December 20 onwards.

Questions and feedback can be set also through email or webform.

Customer service desks at the Campus Libraries are closed between December 20 - January 9.

    Extended Loan Periods

    Loans and renewals will receive a due date on January 11 2022 as follows:

    • 28 day loans starting on November 24,
    • 14 day loans (textbooks) starting on December 8, and
    • 2 day loans starting on December 22.

    In Kumpula and Meilahti, the long loan period will begin a few days earlier: November 22, December 6, and December 16.

    Personal Delivery for UH Staff to Work Address

    Members of the University of Helsinki staff can request books (excluding textbooks) and articles in periodicals to be delivered to their desk. To qualify for this service, the user’s customer information in Helka must include a University email address and the user must be indicated as belonging to the University staff.

    When making a request in Helka and selecting the pick up location, scroll down to the bottom of the drop-down menu, and select the lowest point Work Address.

    Reservations and Pick up of Printed Material

    If your reservation is waiting for pick-up in Kumpula or Meilahti, you can collect it from there until Friday, December 17. After that, the reservations are moved to the Kaisa House and you can collect them there from Tuesday, December 21, onwards.

    Reservations at Kaisa House and Viikki can be picked up as usual in accordance with holiday opening hours.

    Kumpula and Meilahti can not be chosen as a Pickup Location in Helka while the campus libraries are closed in December 17 - January 9.

    You can order books from the Kumpula and Meilahti collections to be picked up from the Kaisa House or Viikki by making a normal reservation for the book in the Helka database.

    As a rule students can’t get reference material from Meilahti or Kumpula. However, in case of an urgent need e.g. having to do with graduation it is possible to get material before January 9 by contacting the library (kirjasto@helsinki.fi). All cases are assessed individually.

    All interlibrary loans will be picked up from the Kaisa House between December 20 - January 7.

    Return your Books to Kaisa House, Viikki or Drop Boxes

    You can return books to the Main Library and Viikki. You can also use return boxes in Kumpula, Kaisa House and Meilahti throughout the holidays.

    Note that the return boxes in Kumpula and Meilahti are emptied on Mondays and Thursdays. Your loans may not necessarily appear as returned immediately and fines will be collected if the loans are overdue.

    On the Kumpula Campus the overnight return box is located at Physicum’s main entrance (Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a), next to the gray side door.

    At the Main Library in Kaisa House (Fabianinkatu 30), there is an overnight return machine on the left side of the main entrance. 

    On the Meilahti Campus, please use the return box at the lobby in Haartmaninkatu 3. The building is open Mon-Fri 7:45 a.m. - 3 p.m.
