Miguel Martínez is Professor of Urban Sociology at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF), Uppsala University. With a theoretical background combining insights from political science, urban planning, social geography and Marxist political economy, Miguel’s work is influenced by participatory action research (PAR) methodologies. Miguel’s research explores topics from urban activism, urban planning, housing, social movements and participatory methods to self-management, autonomy, citizen participation, activist research, democracy, labour, and migrations. The central focus of Miguel’s research is the squatting movement, and he is the author of Squatters in the Capitalist City: Housing, Justice, and Urban Politics (2020, Routledge).
On January 28th, 2025, we are pleased to warmly invite you to a guest lecture as Professor Martínez will deliver a presentation of his most recent work, The Research Handbook on Urban Sociology (2024, Edward Elgar) at the University of Helsinki. An extensive edited volume of 37 chapters, the handbook emphasizes the social, critical and situated dimensions of the urban. The volume presents a unique collection of theoretical and empirical perspectives on urban sociology. Bringing together expert contributors from across the world, it provides a rich overview and research agenda for contemporary urban sociological scholarship. The lecture opens new research perspectives also for examining urban life in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, the development of the built environment and, for example, the issue of housing.
In connection with the lecture, we are excited to also organize a research seminar open to local, young, and established researchers examining urbanization issues in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and beyond. Professor Martínez will comment and discuss research articles and manuscripts. Interested seminar participants are asked to submit their presentation abstracts or manuscripts no later than January 20th to mika.hyotylainen@helsinki.fi or veikko.eranti@helsinki.fi.
