The Institute

We are building a research culture that creates new multidisciplinary and inspiring research collaboration on the City Centre Campus and with partners outside the university. We promote the renewal of content and methodology in the research fields in social sciences and humanities.

Our goal is to be among the five best scientific institutes in Europe in our field by 2030.
  • Strengthen the research collaboration in the social sciences and humanities to generate new multidisciplinary research projects
  • Coordinate the efficient use of research infrastructures
  • Promote the scientific and social impact of social sciences and humanities research nationally and internationally
  • Long-term development of research methods and the utilization of digital data
  • Improve researchers' access to external research funding – specifically from international sources

Helsinki institute for Social Sciences and Humanities promotes, coordinates and supports multidisciplinary research cooperation in social sciences and humanities. We are building a new, interdisciplinary research culture that creates the conditions for new research openings and promotes the renewal of content and methodology in the SSH research areas.

The Board of the Institute is the highest decision-making body of HSSH. It’s in charge of the major decisions and strategic leadership of the institute. The Board of the Institute consists of the Deans/Directors/Rectos of the founding faculties and units who are presented on The Boards webpage.

The Director of the Institute organizes and runs the day-to-day operations as well as the work of the HSSH Office, and is supported in this task by the Vice Director of the Institute.

The Scientific Board of the Institute consists of representatives of scientific experts from each of the founding faculties and units. It helps the Directors and the Board of the Institute in their tasks of promoting multidisciplinary research culture and methodological development. The Scientific Board also serves as the City Center Campus Research Infrastructure Group which plans and implements the coordination and development of research infrastructures at the City Center Campus. Members of the Scientific Board are also presented on The Boards webpage.

The Administrative Working Group is HSSH’s link to the various tracks of university services such as HR, research support, and financial services.
