Research drives gradual progress in cattle disease prevention

The cattle sector always looks forward to Professor of Ruminant Health Heli Simojoki’s latest research results.

What are your research topics?

My research focuses on calf health and infectious diseases in cattle. I’m particularly interested in hoof diseases and respiratory tract infections. My duties are split between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.

Where and how does the topic of your research have an impact?

I’m pleased by the interest my research receives from professionals in the field. Our research group’s results are always highly anticipated by veterinarians, advisers, the food industry and cattle owners. However, as disease prevalence is driven by multiple factors, progress in prevention and treatment is gradual. Improving cattle welfare and reducing disease prevalence also benefit our collective health, in line with the One Health approach. Animal, human and environmental health are closely interlinked.

What is particularly inspiring in your field right now?

Many researchers, myself included, are inspired when research reveals phenomena that cannot easily be explained by existing knowledge. This encourages us to keep working on the subject and consider it from fresh angles.
