The Department of Church History studies churches and religious movements as both instigators and targets of change. Its research focuses on the influence on society by churches and religious communities as well as by their opponents. The Department provides research-based teaching in two disciplines: general church history and Finnish and Scandinavian church history.

The Department of Systematic Theology encompasses the theological sciences that study the content and structure of Christianity or other doctrines and faiths. The Department’s research focuses, among other things, on theology and philosophy during the Reformation and in the Middle Ages, patristic studies, global theology, and ecumenical and social issues. The Department provides research-based teaching in four disciplines: dogmatics, ecumenics, theological and social ethics, as well as the philosophy of religion.

The discipline of study of religions studies religious phenomena and traditions, as well as customs, beliefs, writings and institutions related to them. The study of religions is a discipline of both the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Theology. The discipline welcomes researchers, teachers and students from both faculties.
