Language technology

Language technology, earlier known as computational linguistics, is a multidisciplinary field studying the technical tools and methods through which human language – spoken and written – can be structured into a form processed by computers. Known application areas of language technology are automatic spelling and grammar checks, as well as automatic speech recognition.

At the University of Helsinki, the focus areas in research related to language technology are

  • Language technology in morphologically rich languages
  • Cross-lingual and multilingual natural language processing
  • Language technology in the humanities

Found in Translation: Natural Language Understanding with Cross-lingual Grounding is an ERC funded project led by Jörg Tiedemann. It will run 2018–2023 within the language technology research group at the University of Helsinki.
