New Master's Programme aims for success in exporting Finnish food

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki has launched a master's programme project related to Finland's food industry growth programme. The three-year project is preparing a two-year international master's programme that strengthens food export and gastronomy expertise.

In the bigger picture, the master's programme project aligns with the goal of Petteri Orpo's government to double Finland's food exports by 2031.

"To achieve the government's objective, we need multidisciplinary food export experts in Finland who will develop international business in the food industry. This involves current short-term needs of companies, but the programme also looks further into the future", says project leader, University Lecturer Sari Ollila.

Graduates of the master's programme will also be willing to tackle challenging research topics, both in the corporate and university sectors.

The programme has already sparked interest

"The planning emphasises competitive content that is attractive and enables interesting career paths. The programme has already sparked interest among students", says Janna Pietikäinen, Vice Dean responsible for education at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki.

The project involves developing the study structure of the English-language master's programme, implementing pilot teaching, marketing, seeking funding, and building a partnership network. The first pilot courses will begin in autumn 2026. The aim is to admit the first students in autumn 2027.

The degree comprises 120 credits, and the duration of studies is two years of full-time study. Detailed application instructions and criteria will be announced later.

Funding for the project is provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland, the Finnish Food Authority, and the University of Helsinki.
