  • Language: Teaching is in English. You can also complete courses, write a Master's thesis and get supervision in Finnish or Swedish.

Application date

The application period for studies starting in autumn 2026 is from 2 to 16 January 2026. Please note that our International Master's Programmes only have one intake per academic year. You can only submit your application during the application period.

As of 1 Jan 2025, non-EU/EEA citizens must pay an application fee when applying to programmes leading to a degree in higher education in Finland (excl. doctoral degrees and Erasmus Mundus programmes). 

The fee is a one-time national fee of 100 euros that covers all applications to studies beginning in the same academic term.

The fee is not collected from applicants who have:

  • a Finnish or EU citizenship,
  • a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen in Finland,
  • a European Union Blue Card,
  • a continuous residence permit in Finland granted on grounds other than studies,
  • a permanent Finnish residence permit, or
  • a long-term resident’s EU residence permit.

The Finnish National Agency of Education will collect the application fee in connection with filling out the application form at the Finnish national education portal Studyinfo. The fee must be paid or you must upload a document proving the exempted category. Otherwise your application will not be processed. 

Unfortunately, it is not possible to get an application fee waiver.

The application fee does not guarantee that you will be offered admission to studies.

Who can apply

The Master's Programme in Technologies for Sustainable Use of Renewable Resources is for students interested in improving sustainability in the agri-food and forest sectors through new and emerging technologies.

You can apply for a master's programme at the University of Helsinki if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You have completed a first- or second-cycle (bachelor’s or master’s) degree or a postgraduate degree at a higher education institution in Finland, or an equivalent degree abroad that gives you eligibility to apply to master's level programmes in the awarding country, or will do so by the given deadline.
  2. You have sufficient skills in the language (English, Finnish or Swedish) that you choose as the language of the degree on the application form.
  3. You have completed a sufficient amount of studies applicable to the master’s programme.

Applicable studies for this programme are, e.g. a relevant bachelor's degree in natural sciences, agricultural sciences, forestry, food sciences, engineering, computer science, or economics.

In the Master’s Programme in Technologies for Sustainable Use of Renewable Resources, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the operating environment of the Finnish natural resource industry, its key actors and the importance of renewable resources for sustainable development.
  • Acquire the skills to develop, implement and apply technological solutions that consider different aspects of sustainability in the agri-food and forest sectors.
  • Become able to combine financial thinking with responsible business solutions and cost management in food and wood supply chains.
  • Learn to master a wide range of communication and collaboration skills, such as working in a team and leading its activities, as well as communicating scientifically. 

As a graduate, you will be a professional in sustainability and utilising technical and digital solutions in the agri-food and forest industries in Finland and abroad. You are prepared to work on enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of production systems, using advanced measurement and mapping technologies, or applying artificial intelligence and data analytics across various sectors.
