Programme Director
Get to know the new Director, Professor Vladimir Gel'man

Vladimir Gel'man is a professor of Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Aleksanteri Institute. His expertise covers authoritarianism, electoral and party politics, contentious politics, and regional and local government. In his latest research, he focuses on the political and institutional foundations of quality governance and policy conduct in Russia and post-Soviet Eurasia. He is the author and/or editor of more than twenty books and has authored more than 150 research articles.

"Distinctive to our programme is the interdisciplinary nature of teaching and the widening scope of regions covered in the studies: for example, the increasing need for expertise on Ukraine and Central Asia is reflected in the development of the programme."

Professor Gel'man also highlights the close connections between teaching and research. The poster presentation of MAREEES students at the annual Aleksanteri Conference is one of the ways to include students in the wider academic community.

Professor Gel'man is proud to note the diversity of MAREEES students choosing the programme. Looking forward as the new Director, Professor Gel'man hopes to welcome even more students from all around the world.

"Our programme is truly international."
