Themes

The theme for the event is The State of Learning – Quo vadis, universitas?

The structure of the conference is based on six sub-themes:
1. Vistas of open learning
2. An atmosphere of communal and creative learning
3. The state of pedagogy in my discipline
4. Dialogue between disciplines
5. Status and place of higher education in society
6. Openness and accessibility of education

Vistas of open learning

What kind of a learning landscape do we create inside ourselves and for others? What triggers flow, the state of mind that opens positive vistas for working and developing together? What kinds of creative learning environments are we building within ourselves and for ourselves? How do the physical and digital environments at institutions of higher education support joy, community, lifelong learning and teaching?

An atmosphere of communal and creative learning

What generates a creative learning atmosphere among your students? What kinds of community-focused solutions could promote learning? How do you generate the right mindset for yourself as a teacher? How can you help students do the same? And how can a communal spirit be built? How do you support the skill of thinking differently? How can conflicts lead to a new consensus?

The state of pedagogy in my discipline; research and practical experiments

What kinds of special features do learning and teaching in your discipline involve? How does the expertise in your field develop in your students? How about in you as a teacher? What kind of university pedagogy enables you to address discipline-specific questions? How can you study your own practical experiments from the perspective of university pedagogy?

Dialogue between disciplines

What does multi- and cross-disciplinary dialogue offer for learning and teaching? What and how could we learn from the pedagogical practices of other disciplines? What methods can we use to bring fresh perspectives and new information from “next door” to enrich our teaching and the development of the expertise of our students?

Openness and accessibility of education

How do we enable lifelong learning in a digital world which is not tied to a specific time or place? How can we develop digital learning environments? How do we ensure the high quality of our education? How can we attract the best students to our institutions of higher education when they have the whole world of learning at their fingertips?

Status and place of higher education in society

How can we combine a broad education with efficiency in our competitive society? What kind of higher education would be socially, economically and ecologically sustainable while providing the skills and expertise needed in the society of the future? How will the significance of higher education change when current professions disappear and artificial intelligence threatens to replace human thinking? Will it be possible in the future to grow in a safe and motivating academic community with time to think? How do higher education institutions and employers discuss the competence demands, society and happiness of the future? What is the role and significance of higher education in the “post-truth” era?
