Welcome to study Global Politics and Communication

We invite the newly admitted Master’s students starting their studies in autumn 2020 to take a moment to explore this page and get to know us better. Our students, staff and faculty are eager to welcome you to campus!

The admission results for the Master's Programme in Global Politics and Communication (GPC) for the application round on 3 Dec 2019 - 10 Jan 2020 have been sent to all applicants to the e-mail address given on their application form. The results can also be found by logging into your My Studyinfo –service.

Congratulations on being accepted to the Master’s Programme in Global Politics and Communication (GPC)! We are currently all in exceptional circumstances with university shutdowns, travel restrictions and worldwide anxiety. Yet we are planning beyond and looking forward to welcoming an outstanding, diverse group of incoming students next autumn.

You will receive more practical information about the University of Helsinki from the Admission services throughout the coming months, but if you have any questions about the contents of our programme ahead of starting your studies, feel free to get in touch directly with me. Personally, I look forward to hopefully meeting you all during the orientation week in August and then in our introductory course “Globalizations: Politics, Economy and Communication” in September. Until then, stay safe!

Best regards,

Kari Karppinen, GPC Programme Director

The student community of the GPC programme includes both Finnish students and international students from all over the world. The University of Helsinki and the Faculty of Social Sciences have an active student community, involving a variety of student organisations and activities.

Kannunvalajat is the student organisation for all students in the Faculty of Social Sciences. CISSI, the Organisation of International Social Scientists, is focused specifically on the needs of international students. There are also subject organizations in Media and Communication Studies (Media) and Political Science (VOO) and a range of other political and social associations and activities.

Learn more about some of our student’s experiences in this story, from the student testimonials, or chat with our students.

The teaching officially starts on 31 August 2020, but we highly recommend you to take part in the orientation activities for the new students already before the classes begin. Usually, the orientation activities take place the week before the teaching starts (week 35 starting on 24 August).

You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a senior student, or student tutor. Your tutor will help with questions related to studying in our programme, give support with administrative matters and introduce you to the university campuses and facilities. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki. Each student will also be assigned a teacher tutor with whom you can discuss your personal study plan and goals.

The detailed information concerning the orientation and student tutors will be published on the Instructions for students -website. Remember to select the GPC programme on the dropdown menu to access the relevant information.

The degree involves a career skills module for all students, which can include traineeships (subsidised by the University) or working life projects organised together with other organisations.

Starting in 2020, the GPC programme is participating in the new HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme. It is designed to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into local working life. Students take part by attending monthly group meetings with a company mentor for a period of seven months. During the programme, the University Career Services also provide training in career management skills. International GPC students will have a chance to apply to the HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme in autumn 2020.
