Doctoral Programme in Science

The aim of the Doctoral Programme in Science (SciDoc) is to train and educate top-level scientists and experts in natural sciences and mathematics. The programme is multidisciplinary by design, encompassing research in seven core discipline areas: (i) atmospheric and climate-system sciences, (ii) chemistry, (iii) computer science, (iv) geosciences and geography, (v) materials research and nanoscience, (vi) mathematics and statistics , and (vii) particle physics and universe sciences.

The Doctoral Programme in Science works with a wide number of partner faculties at the University of Helsinki, other universities, national and international research organizations, and businesses. The multidisciplinary nature of the programme enables doctoral researchers to gain new and broader perspectives on their research and to interact with researchers from diverse disciplines in an internationally respected scientific community.

Both fundamental and applied research is included in the programme, addressing global challenges related to e.g. climate change, energy, health, technology, and sustainable resource use, using both theoretical and experimental methods.

The programme prepares doctoral researchers for a wide range of roles in society, including positions in academia, research institutes, industry, government agencies, and international organizations. The studies consist of courses and seminars that support the dissertation research. The dissertation research is mainly done in research groups, where individual guidance is offered to doctoral researchers. 
In SciDoc, doctoral researchers can enter a truly international research environment. Research groups have active international collaborations, and visits both abroad and to Finland are frequent. The articles included in dissertations are usually published in internationally prestigious journals.
