We find it important that the family members of our employees also thrive in Helsinki. We offer a variety of services to support the spouses of the University of Helsinki staff members. The services are free of charge.

The HEI LIFE Spouse Network

The Spouse Network hopes to bring together spouses of employees in higher education institutions in the greater Helsinki area for collaboration, peer support and networking. Everyone belonging to the focus group is most warmly welcome to join the network.

The UniBuddy programme 

The UniBuddy programme helps international staff and their family members get settled at the University of Helsinki and meet new people. The programme is geared to not only University researchers, doctoral students and other staff, but also includes their spouses.

Training on orientation, Finnish working culture and life in Finland

We welcome the spouses of our newly arrived staff members to participate in selected staff training. Training on orientation matters and Finnish working culture as well as the Experiencing Finland event are offered to spouses free of charge. Finnish language courses may also be available depending on the unit.

Information and support for relocation

We assist new international employees and their families in the process of settling in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

We offer a comprehensive online guide covering differents aspects of relocation, including for example sections on Employment of spouses, Childcare and education for children as well as Healthcare and social security for you and your family.

The HEI LIFE Spouse Network and services for interantional Spouses was created during the HEI LIFE project (2022-2022). 

The HEI LIFE project focused on building national models for Finnish higher education institutions to support the integration of international academics, staff and their families. Subproject 3. was focusing on creating several types of services that Finnish HEIs can create and use to support the integration of spouses and families.
