Upper secondary school
The Helsinki Normal Lyceum, more commonly known as Norssi, is a teacher training school that operates under the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Helsinki and comprises a comprehensive school and a general upper secondary school. Norssi hosts approximately 245 upper secondary school students and admits 80 new students each year.

Our school is a versatile general upper secondary school. We encourage our students to work independently, obtain a solid general knowledge base, found their learning on inquiry and practise scholarly thinking. In general upper secondary school, our students have the opportunity to complete courses at the University of Helsinki. We also value creativity and manual skills. At Norssi, students can complete general upper secondary education diplomas in home economics, visual arts, crafts and physical education.

We organise a wide range of thematic days, study excursions to museums and exhibitions as well as trips to the theatre and opera. In early May, we celebrate the traditional Norssi Day, and towards the end of the month we compete in sports with the Ressu Upper Secondary School.

Helsinki Normal Lyceum's principal of upper secondary school is Marja Honkaheimo.

Contact information for school staff can be found here: Contact information.

The upper secondary school is taught by the school's subject teachers and guidance counselors. In addition, each class has its own homeroom teacher.

The upper secondary school student council includes all students at the Helsinki Normal Lyceum general upper secondary school. All students can vote and stand in the student council board elections that elect the student council board at the beginning of each school year. The board makes proposals and gives reports on matters pertaining to upper secondary school students and organises various events and activities for students. The student council also promotes student satisfaction by making agreements with various companies, including vending machine suppliers.

The student council board wants to represent and serve Norssi’s students in the best possible way. If there is anything you think the council board should address or that could be improved, contact us by email or by post! You can also come talk to us in the hallway at school.

Through collaboration between school and home, the organisation of education and teaching is supported in a way that ensures the provision of instruction, guidance and support to each pupil in accordance with their developmental stage and needs. Such collaboration promotes pupils’ healthy growth and development. The participation of guardians and the opportunity for them to contribute to schoolwork and its development constitute a central part of the school’s operating culture. Educational collaboration between the school and the home enhances the wellbeing and safety of pupils, classes and the entire school community.

In school–home interaction, the Wilma system is used on a daily basis.

Parents of the pupils of the Helsinki Normal Lyceum operate an active parents’ association, with which the school collaborates. Further details on the activities of the parents’ association are available on its website: Parents’ association.
