LexComics

The LexComics exhibition explores the impact of rapidly evolving technology on society. What is the role of humans and machines in law? What problems could arise, for example, with smart streetlights or the use of technology to predict crimes?

University of Helsinki Legal Tech Lab's research-based comics project began with the simple idea: research should be fun. The cartoons are created collaboratively. For each comic, a roundtable discussion was organised. The discussion revolved around a loose topic or argument, while the cartoonist, Annukka Mäkijärvi, listened. Mäkijärvi turned the first roundtable discussion in winter 2021 into a comic strip called The Case of the Robo Judge. There were seven discussions in total, of which the results of five now appear in this exhibition.

The aim of the project is to experiment with the visualisation and storytelling of research. The comic strip as a method is fascinating because it necessitates simplifying the research content and argumentation. Through comics, we can communicate law and technology research topics in a way unbound by academic and scientific expression.

The exhibition is free of charge and can be visited 6.5.–29.8.2025 during the opening hours of Think Corner.

The University of Helsinki Legal Tech Lab, located at the Faculty of Law, is an interdisciplinary and international research hub examining the intersections of law, technology, and society.
