As part of the Department of Forest Sciences the Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI) provides academic training and implements research on forests and related natural resources in tropical and developing countries. VITRI staff also undertakes national and international assignments related to tropical forest management as well as environmental and forest policy.
Our Vision is to promote the sustainable management and conservation of tropical forest landscapes while enhancing the livelihoods of people dependent on those resources, within the sustainable development framework.
Our Mission is to:
1. Provide high quality undergraduate and post-graduate education;
2. Conduct novel, cutting-edge research on tropical forestry, agroforestry, land change and conservation. This includes cross-cutting issues such as climate change and sustainability;
3. Build capacity for research and pedagogy in tropical developing countries through targeted programmes;
4. Conduct development activities to improve livelihoods of natural resource-dependent communities in the tropics
