Dr. Kröger was in Lisbon for a period of researcher mobility following his involvement in the COP2030 in Brazil. Read more about Markus’ experience at COP2030 here.
This session was put on as part of the Master program in Human Geography: Globalization, Society and Territory. The meeting focused on a dialogue with Markus about his most recent open access book, Clearcut: Political Economies of Deforestation (University of Cambridge Press), and his earlier open access book, Extractivism, Existences and Extinctions: Monoculture Plantations and Amazon Deforestation (Routledge).
The session, moderated by José Luís Zêzere, who is a professor at the Institute of Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Lisbon. Dr. Zêzere brought together comments from IGOT researchers, which promoted a lively discussion on political economies of deforestation, extractive models, and contemporary socio-environmental dynamics.
Markus will be talking about Clearcut on December 11, 2025, in a digital session hosted by the EXALT Initiative and the Trees For Development Project.
