Small Animal Research: FaunaFysio – Physiotherapy research group members
Heli Hyytiäinen Clinical lecturer

Heli is a docent of veterinary physiotherapy, and leader of research group FaunaFysio. Her basic education is in human physiotherapy, after which she has specialised in veterinary physiotherapy, and has also a Master of Science degree from the field. She gained her PhD in 2015 on physiotherapeutic research methods’ validation and development of new assessment method for dogs with stifle disease. In her research work Heli is especially interested in poorly animals’ physiotherapy related topics -regardless of the animals’ species or type of the disease. In addition to her research work, she works as a clinical and counselling lecturer in the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Leena Inkilä, DVM

Leena Inkilä has done her PhD on the physical demands of agility on dogs, and carries on her post doc research on the same topic.

Nina Hakonen, DVM

Nina is specialist in equine diseases and is doing her PhD on foals’ early motor development. Along her research work, Nina works at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Kami Turunen, DVM

Kami is a veterinarian specialised on diagnostic imaging, who has started her PhD project and research career in 2021 on dogs’ pes varus -disorder.

Annica Hirvi, DVM

Annica is a veterinarian and works as a mobile equine practician at stables. She has also done specialisation periods at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and collaboration with the Porvoo Equine clinic. For her PhD she studies foal’s cognitive development and neurologically ailing foals’ development in comparison to healthy ones’s. In the foal study Annica’s interest to horses’ behaviour is combined with clinical equine medicine. Annica’s PhD study is being done in collaboration with the Research Centre for Animal Welfare.

Karoliina Mikola, DVM

Karoliina has graduated as a licentiate of veterinary medicine from the University of Helsinki in 2009 and as a specialist in small animal diseases in 2018.  A the moment Karoliina works at the Eläinsairaala Vettori in Raisio focusing primarily on musculoskeletal diseases and surgery. Karoliina’s PhD is on Shetland Sheepdog’s superficial digital flexor tendon luxation. Her PhD research is being done in collaboration with research group PetBone.

Jenni Ranki, DVM

Jenni is a specialist in small animal diseases, and in her PhD research she studies rabbits’ osteoarthritis related pain. In addition to her research work she works clinically as a veterinarian. Her special interests include pets’ acute and intensive care, exotic pets, especially rabbits’, diseases and treatment. Jenni’s PhD research is done in collaboration with research group PetBone.

Heidi Hermiö, DVM

Heidi graduated as a licentiate of veterinary medicine in 2019 from the University of Helsinki. Along her research work se does small animal practice, where in addition to cats and dogs she treats also a lot of rabbits and small rodents. Special interests include rabbit health and rehabilitation in e.g. osteoarthritis patients. PhD research’s topic is joint range of motion and rabbit activity in healthy rabbits. Heidi’s PhD research is done in collaboration with research group PetBone

Heidi on valmistunut eläinlääketieteen lisensiaatiksi 2019 Helsingin yliopistosta. Hän tekee tutkimustyön ohella pieneläinpraktiikka, jossa kissojen ja koirien lisäksi hoitaa myös paljon kaneja ja pieniä jyrsijöitä. Erityisiä kiinnostuksen kohteita ovat kanien terveys sekä kuntouttavat hoidot mm. nivelrikkopotilailla. Väitöskirjatutkimuksen aiheena on terveiden kanien nivelten liikelaajuudet sekä kanien aktiivisuus. Heidin väitöskirjatutkimusta tehdään yhteistyössä tutkimusryhmä kanssa.
