PhD, Associate Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases
I am the Director of Helsinki One Health network and work both at the Department of Virology, Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. I also serve as the Vice-Dean responsible for social engagement for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. My One Health research focuses on emerging infectious diseases and factors driving spillover from wildlife to domestic animals and to people. Find out more through Tarja Sironen ORCID account.
MD, PhD, Professor of zoonotic virology (since 2003)
I work both at medical and veterinary faculties of University of Helsinki, Finland. I have supervised 12 finalized PhD projects and have 277 PubMed publications (July 2018) mainly on arboviruses and zoonoses. I am also a specialist in clinical microbiology with clincial diagnostic responsibilites at Helsinki University Hospital laboratories with a unit for viral zoonoses. I am member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and member of EVD-LabNet (Emerging Viral diseases Laboratory Network).
PhD, DSc, associate professor, Medical University of Gdansk, Poland
I am a parasitologist holding the associate professor position at the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine of the Medical University of Gdansk in Poland. I specialize in parasitology and rodent-borne diseases. My interests include parasite ecology, host-pathogen interactions and emerging infectious diseases. I lead national and international research projects focusing on biodiversity, intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing parasite prevalence in rodents and searching for novel vectors and reservoirs for pathogens. I am a member of the World Health Organisation NTD-STAG Working Group on Monitoring, Evaluation and Research.
PhD, Professor of Veterinary Pathology, DiplECVP, FRCPath, FTA & FVH (Pathology), ECVP-CFVP
I am a veterinary pathologist, Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Director of the Institute of Veterinary Pathology at the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich, Switzerland. I am also Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool and Docent in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Helsinki, the two universities where I held professorships before I moved to Zurich. My research interest is broad, with a strong focus on the (immuno)pathogenesis of infectious diseases. I work on animal diseases, like Boid Inclusion Body Disease (BIBD) of constrictor snakes, Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) in ruminants, and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) but also work intensely with animal models of zoonotic diseases.
PhD, Adjunct Professor of Molecular Virology
He is a Principal Investigator whose lab explores virus–cell interactions using interdisciplinary methods, including high-content automated microscopy, machine learning, and super-resolution imaging to decode viral infection mechanisms
PhD, Professor, Rega Institute, KU Leuven
Prof. Philippe Lemey is a distinguished leader in computational and evolutionary virology. He has pioneered real-time viral genomic mapping through contributions to the BEAST software platform, which has been widely used in outbreaks such as Ebola and Lassa. His interdisciplinary research applies Bayesian phylogenetics and phylodynamics to uncover viral spread, evolution, and transmission dynamics across pathogens like SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and HIV.
PhD, Lecturer/Researcher, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, University of Nairobi
Dr. Humphrey Kariuki Njaanake is an infectious disease researcher with extensive expertise in pathology, immunology, and diagnostics of parasitic and bacterial infections. His work spans laboratory research, study design, project implementation, and data management, contributing to both scientific advancement and public health. With over 13 years of teaching and mentorship, he has supervised numerous master’s and PhD students, fostering the next generation of researchers in microbiology and immunology.
