We in the RIP-team had the pleasure to host visitors from the Czech Republic (Milan Zuna and Filip Jankovsky from the ÚJV Řež) and Japan (Ayaka Koike from NUMO and Yuta Fukatsu from JAEA) in relation to the Grimsel LTD-GAM project in February. The multi-year study project has been conducted in Switzerland's Grimsel Test Site (GTS) to examine the transport properties of radionuclides in fractured and altered rock material. Following the transport study, a portion of the studied rock area was cored and segmented into smaller sample discs.
To further study the sorption and transport characteristics of the selected radionuclides, these core segments are to be further subsampled and cut into smaller pieces for easier handling and examination with advanced radioanalytical methods. To this end, selected core segments were sent to Helsinki to RIP-team, where we have the capacity to handle and cut radioactive geological samples for project cooperators. On Tuesday 24.2. and Wednesday 25.2. meetings, the sawing plans were first agreed upon and the first cuts of the segments were done under the supervision of the cooperating visitors. After the first cuts, the resulting subsamples will be dried and imaged with autoradiography, and the next part of the subsampling will proceed during the spring.
The work continues here in the RIP-team laboratory. We thank all the partners for the great cooperation and help. It was great to have you here!
