Research

The focus of Eija Pirinen's research is to investigate molecular mechanisms behind diseases characterized with genetic or acquired mitochondria dysfunction such as inherited mitochondrial disorders, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The research aims at understanding the role of polyamine metabolism and NAD+-dependent enzymes, sirtuins and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases in the regulation of mitochondrial function in normal and diseased states. The overall goal of Eija’s research is to develop novel treatments for both inherited mitochondrial disorders and obesity.
